Lecturas Intermedias Prosas y Poesía

I’ve been reading through this book the past couple of months at bedtime.

The Book

I’ve had this book since the late 90s. More than 20 years of saying “I’ll read it later”. It’s great to read at bedtime instead of staring at my phone.

I really like this book because it’s filled with tons of different sentence types:

  • questions
  • model sentences
  • translation exercises

I study the grammar in the sentences and the translations are really helpful. Many times I’ve said “oh, so that’s how you say that!”. I also read the sentences out loud to practice the pronunciation.

I enjoy learning new vocabulary but the grammar is the best part seeing how conjugated verbs go together. Examples:

Si tuviera más años podría comprar un coche {notice 'Si tuviera' followed by 'podría' + verb infinitive}

Me pidió que le comprara un nuevo reloj {past tense 'pidió' followed by past subjunctive 'comprara'}

El jefe no queria que sus hombres lo supieran {imperfect 'queria' later followed by past subjunctive 'supieran'}

The Bookstore?

When I lived in Mexico City I discovered a street in the historic downtown with used bookstores. The area was one of my favorite places to visit. I think I found it on google maps: Street Justo Sierra.

Maybe it was Libreria Nely:

…or La Feria del Libro:

I loved wandering around this area. So much history including:

  • Templo Mayor de México-Tenochtitlan
  • Palacio Nacional
  • Museo Nacional de las Culturas
  • Plaza Garibaldi (a short walk away)
  • My favorite Sanborns restaurant (below)

Latin GRAMMY 2021

While I wrote this post I was watching the Latin GRAMMY awards. Latin America has such a variety of beautiful music genres. So many famous musicians were there including:

  • Maná
  • Rubén Blades
  • Gloria Estefan
  • Christina Aguilera
  • Mana y Alejandro Fernandez
