Mexico & Canada

In the 90s I travelled/lived in Mexico off and on. I loved it. The people, culture, language, food! I’ll share many of my experiences in future posts.

20 years ago I started my career as a Data Analyst in Toronto. My focus shifted to learning formulas and code leaving less time for Spanish.

Redescubrimento

I can’t remember exactly what happened but I’ve rekindled my passion for learning Spanish. It’s an amazing challenge that will never end and it’s fun and rewarding. I do remember thinking:

If not now then when?

It will be an amazing hobby in retirement, which isn’t that far away!

New & Old

I found my Spanish dictionaries, grammar books, cassette tapes etc. and also explored the explosion of online language learning resources! It was fun to explore them but I had to answer the questions:

How do I learn best? What’s my plan?

Learning Plan?

In my next post I’ll review how I created a basic plan. It will evolve over time but it’s helped me to jump back in and restart my learning Journey.

Why a Blog?

I’m back into learning Spanish but why blog about it? Many reasons have floated around in my head including:

• organization: it will help me keep track of the resources I’m using
• review vocab: it’s essential to review vocab from my a class, apps, books, etc
• helping others: many have asked me how I learn Spanish. A blog would be a way to help others who want to learn
• accountability: if I neglect Spanish my blog will hopefully pull me back in

Por vs Para

Why “por” and not “para”? There are rules that determine which one to use. I need to practice this. Sometimes I know which one to use but others times I’m not sure.

Accents

“pasión” the ó has an accent to override the general rule: for words ending in n, s, or any vowel the natural emphasis when pronouncing falls on the 2nd last syllable. If this is not the case then add an accent over the letter.

I’ll have to check if my memory is right on this.
